Dolch Grade 1 Sight Words Set 3

THANK and THINK are almost the same word — change one vowel and you switch from gratitude to thought. The Grade 1 list is full of these near-twins, and learning to spot the small difference is part of becoming a careful reader.

This is the third and final set of Dolch Grade 1 sight words, completing the third level of the list. It’s rich in “th” words — THEM, THEN, THINK, THANK — along with the silent-L surprise of WALK and the rounded-U sound of PUT. Finishing the Grade 1 level is a real milestone for a first grader, and this word search offers a focused way to round it off. All twelve are here.

The “th” cluster and a few surprises

Four of this set’s words begin with “th” — THEM, THEN, THINK, THANK — continuing the “th” thread from C06. By now your child should be reading those two letters at a glance, going straight to the rest of the word. THEM and THEN are near-twins (one vowel apart) just like THANK and THINK — four words in two pairs, each pair distinguished by a single vowel. Reading them correctly means looking past the shared “th” to the letter that decides everything.

WALK is the surprise of the set. It has a silent L, joining COULD (from C08), WOULD and SHOULD (coming in Grade 2). The L was pronounced long ago and the spelling kept the record — exactly the same fossil pattern children met with KNOW’s silent K in the previous puzzle, and the same pattern that runs through the UK Year 2 list. PUT belongs to the FOOT-U family from the UK Year 1 list (B03) — the U doesn’t say “uh” like in CUP but a rounded “oo” like in FOOT. Tell your child: PUT, PULL, FULL, BULL, FOOT all share this rounded U. A small family, worth recognizing as a group.

Five to point out while searching

1. THANK and THINK are vowel-twins. Find both. Then write THANK above THINK on a piece of paper and ask your child what’s the same and what’s different. Same start, same end, one vowel apart — and completely different meanings.
2. WALK has a silent L. Cover the L and read WAK. That’s closer to how the word sounds. Tell your child: the L is a fossil — it used to be pronounced. Same trick as COULD from C08, and WOULD/SHOULD coming up.
3. PUT belongs to the FOOT-U family. Find it. Then ask your child to say PUT, PULL and FOOT one after the other. Same rounded U sound, three words. The family is small but common.
4. WERE looks like an exception. Cover the W and read ERE. Then add the W back — WERE sounds like “wur”, not “ware” or “weer”. A short past-tense word with no rule, just memorize.
5. ROUND has the “ow” sound. Find it. The OU here says “ow” like in HOW (which was in C09) — not “or” like in FOUR or “oo” like in YOU. Three flavors of OU, all already met. Tell your child: OU is one of the most variable letter pairs in English.

Rounding off the Grade 1 level

As a vowel-twin starter. Write four pairs on the board: THANK / THINK, THEN / THEM, PIN / PEN, BIT / BAT. Class reads each pair aloud and notes the vowel difference. The exercise teaches a real lesson: one letter can change the entire word. Careful reading is the skill that makes spelling possible.

As a silent-letter family hunt in pairs. Pairs find WALK in the grid and list every silent-letter word they have met so far across the Dolch sets: KNOW (silent K, C09), WHO (silent W, C07), WHOLE (silent W). Then add words they know with silent letters from anywhere: LAMB (silent B), KNIFE (silent K). The collection across multiple puzzles builds an early taxonomy of silent letters.

One-to-one at home. For homeschooling families, this is the closing milestone of Dolch Grade 1 — your child has met every Grade 1 word across three sets. To mark it, sit with your child and read every Grade 1 word from C08 to C10 aloud, ticking the ones they know on sight. The remainders go on a small notebook for one more week of friendly review. The achievement is the journey: forty Grade 1 words, the bridge between early and confident reading in place.
